LEED v5 introduces a more flexible, data-driven and forward-thinking approach to sustainable building certification, offering tools and guidance for both new certifications and recertifications. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED v5 emphasizes decarbonization, quality of life and ecological restoration while helping building owners maintain leadership in sustainability. The new version simplifies the recertification process through the free LEED v5 O+M Scorecard Builder, waived registration fees and reduced performance data requirements, making it easier for existing LEED-certified buildings to transition and remain compliant with evolving standards. By encouraging ongoing improvement rather than one-time achievement, LEED v5 ensures that buildings continue to perform efficiently, reduce emissions and promote occupant well-being.
Recertification under LEED v5 applies to all previously certified Building Design and Construction (BD+C) and Operations and Maintenance (O+M) projects, requiring 12 months of performance data and fulfillment of core prerequisites. Projects automatically receive five leadership points for their prior achievements and have the flexibility to pursue additional credits tailored to their goals. LEED v5’s focus on performance, transparency and accessibility reflects a shift toward continuous accountability in green building practices. As the deadlines for older versions approach, LEED v5 stands as the industry’s new benchmark—guiding property owners toward more sustainable, resilient and market-leading operations well into the next decade.
