How builder, developer and professional collaborations are transforming the industry
By Scott Larson
As Builder and Developer magazine celebrates 35 years of shaping the homebuilding industry, it is a privilege to reflect on the remarkable evolution of our field. Over the decades, homebuilding has been defined not just by materials and methods, but by a spirit of collaboration that extends beyond construction sites and into the very fabric of our communities.
At HomeAid, we have witnessed firsthand how builders, developers and industry professionals have harnessed their expertise and resources to address one of the nation’s most pressing challenges—housing insecurity. For more than 35 years, HomeAid has partnered with builders to create safe and dignified housing for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. This synergy between the for-profit and nonprofit sectors exemplifies how industry advancements in construction, sustainability and design are not only elevating homebuilding but also expanding its impact in meaningful ways.
The Evolution of Homebuilding: A Commitment to Innovation and Purpose
Since Builder and Developer was founded in 1990, the industry has seen incredible advancements—from the rise of energy-efficient designs to the adoption of smart home technology. These innovations have not only redefined the way we build but have also enhanced the quality of life for homeowners and renters alike.
Alongside these advancements, there has been a growing recognition that homebuilding is more than an economic driver—it is a force for social good. Today, builders and developers are leveraging their knowledge and resources to address housing affordability and homelessness. Many companies now integrate philanthropy into their business models, recognizing that the homes they build shape the future of our communities.
The Power of Collaboration: Uniting for a Common Cause
HomeAid’s model is built on collaboration. By partnering with builders, trade partners and suppliers, we develop housing solutions for people in need. This approach has allowed us to complete over 1,400 housing projects, adding more than 15,000 beds across the country. These efforts are only possible because of the generosity and leadership of homebuilders who recognize that success in this industry goes beyond profit margins—it is about building lives and strengthening communities.

One of the most inspiring aspects of this work is seeing how the industry rallies together in times of crisis. Whether responding to natural disasters, economic downturns or the growing need for affordable housing, builders and developers consistently step up. After the devastating fires in Lahaina, Maui, for example, HomeAid’s partners mobilized to raise nearly $1.2 million in recovery support, demonstrating the industry’s unwavering commitment to helping those in need.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Homebuilding and Housing Solutions
As we look to the future, the homebuilding industry will continue to be at the forefront of innovation. Sustainable building practices, modular construction and AI-driven design are reshaping how homes are built, making them more efficient, resilient and adaptable to changing needs. But beyond technological advancements, the industry’s true legacy will be defined by its commitment to addressing housing challenges and ensuring that everyone has access to a place to call home.
The next 35 years present an opportunity to deepen these efforts. By forging stronger public-private partnerships, expanding philanthropic initiatives and continuing to innovate, the homebuilding industry can be a driving force in solving the nation’s housing crisis. At HomeAid, we are proud to stand alongside Builder and Developer magazine and the many professionals who make this industry great. Together, we are not just building homes—we are building hope, stability and a future where everyone has a place to belong.
Congratulations to Builder and Developer on this incredible milestone, and here’s to many more years of impact and innovation!
