With ownership increasingly out of reach, 103.5 million U.S. households cannot afford a median-priced new home at $495,750, according to the NAHB. While the organization’s latest study confirms that two-thirds of buyers still prefer single-family detached homes, these homes only account for 54% of occupied housing units nationwide.
Townhouses, offering affordability and lower maintenance, are being championed as an alternative by some, yet they represent just 4% of the owner-occupied market.
