According to the NAHB, homeownership among younger households has reached its lowest level since early 2020. Only about 37% of Americans under 35 own homes as of Q3 2024. This drop, highlighted by the Census Housing Vacancy Survey, reflects the impact of high mortgage rates and a limited supply of entry-level homes — all challenges disproportionately affecting younger buyers sensitive to affordability issues.
Meanwhile, the overall U.S. homeownership rate remains steady at 65.6%, though it is still below the long-term average of 66.4%.
