Hello readers in print and online.
As we move into the fall months, we are seeing the beginnings of what may become the anticipated market slow down taking shape in the housing market. September’s numbers indicate a slowing down in traffic at models, as well as mortgage applications and construction permitting activity, in some major metros. Upward movement in mortgage Interest rates are playing a role in this. House prices and a lack of affordability are putting the brakes on the entry level side of the market. Household formations are not taking shape as in previous decades, with our younger generations. Deferring starting their families until later in life keeps these potential buyers on the sidelines of the housing market, at least at the moment.
A natural cycle has highs and low – we are all used to these in the new home construction business. Regardless of whether or not the housing cycle is trending down, the fundamentals should be in place to make the next cycle less severe than the previous adjustments our industry went thorough. A very solid number of homes will continue to be built and sold and the housing industry will march on.
This is our sixth green themed issue of the magazine for 2018. The subject I believe we understand best as a home building specific media business is high performance home building. We have also published sister magazine Green Home Builder, bi -monthly for the past 13 years. Our team has been covering sustainability, energy efficiency, smart home technology, advanced framing design, the building envelope, performance ceilings and attics, insulation technology, HERS rating, certifications and all of the requisite components that collectively speak to green home building for two decades plus now.
But we don’t just talk the talk, we really do walk the walk: our award winning ABC Green demonstration Home Project has collected no fewer than 10 prizes, so far. Including a pair of Gold Nugget Awards, NAHB’s Best Green Interior, as well as the recognition of the U.S. Congress and the California State Senate. My business Partner Stuart Cochrane and I were pleased to accept the 2018 Sustainable Engineering Project of the Year award in October, from the American Society of Civil Engineers, award number 10. We have a large number of people, who have joined us on the ABC Green Home Project journey, to thank for the success of the project. Over 150 of our advertisers have provided their materials, 25 consultants have contributed their time to the design and construction and both The Southern California Gas Company and the Southern California Edison Company have got behind the project too. For more on the project please visit the website at www. abcgreenhome.com You can click the live job site camera link and watch a LEED Platinum, Net-Zero, smart home built in real time.
We are pleased to showcase very green home builders within this issue. I am particularly pleased to welcome our special B&D Interview and my old friend of many years, Larry Webb and his amazing home building company The New Home Company to the pages of Builder & Developer this month. I used to tease Larry about green home building and he would respond by telling me he would be long retired before he would ever go there. Well, not so fast Larry. I see you are working hard with your excellent team and building sustainable green homes after all. Hooray and well done mate! Welcome aboard this issue and thank you. Thanks to each of you, for the privilege of your readership.
